Choosing outdoor furniture is different from choosing indoor pieces. The furniture needs to withstand sun, rain, temperature changes, and humidity while still looking good. Here is what to look for when shopping for patio furniture.
Material Matters Most
The frame material determines how long your furniture will last outdoors. Here is a breakdown of the most common options:
Teak
Teak is the gold standard for outdoor wood furniture. It contains natural oils that repel water and resist rot. Untreated teak weathers to a silver-gray patina over time, which many people prefer. If you want to maintain the original golden color, apply teak oil once or twice a year.
Aluminum
Powder-coated aluminum is lightweight, rust-proof, and low-maintenance. It is ideal for chairs and tables that need to be moved frequently. Look for frames with a thick powder coating, as thin coatings can chip and expose the metal underneath.
Wicker (Resin)
Modern outdoor wicker is made from resin or polyethylene, not natural rattan. It is UV-resistant, waterproof, and will not crack or fade like natural wicker. Resin wicker is a great choice for seating that gets daily sun exposure.
Recycled Plastic
Recycled plastic furniture is eco-friendly, weather-proof, and virtually maintenance-free. It will not rot, crack, or fade. The color goes all the way through the material, so scratches are less visible.
Check the Weight Capacity
Always check the weight capacity before buying. A good outdoor chair should support at least 250 pounds. Sectionals and sofas should list their total weight capacity.
Cushion Fabric
If your furniture comes with cushions, look for Sunbrella or solution-dyed acrylic fabrics. These are UV-resistant, water-repellent, and resist fading. Cheap cushions will fade within one season.
Storage Considerations
Even weather-resistant furniture lasts longer with some protection. Consider whether you have space to store cushions indoors during winter, and whether you can cover the frames when not in use.
