Outdoor furniture is an investment. With proper care, quality patio furniture can last 10-15 years or more. Here is a seasonal care guide to keep your pieces looking their best.
Spring: Clean and Inspect
Start the season with a thorough cleaning. For most materials, warm water and mild dish soap is all you need. Use a soft brush to remove dirt from crevices. Inspect frames for rust spots, loose bolts, or cracked welds.
Summer: Routine Maintenance
During peak use, wipe down furniture weekly with a damp cloth. For wicker, use a vacuum with a brush attachment to remove dust from between the weaves. Wash cushions monthly and let them dry completely before storing.
Fall: Prepare for Winter
Clean everything one final time before storing. Apply a protective spray to metal frames. For teak, apply teak oil if you want to maintain the golden color. Store cushions indoors to prevent mold and mildew.
Winter: Storage
If possible, store furniture in a garage or shed. If you must leave it outside, use furniture covers that are properly fitted and secured. Elevate furniture off the ground to prevent moisture damage from snow and ice.
Material-Specific Tips
Teak
Clean with a teak-specific cleaner once a year. Avoid pressure washers, which can damage the wood grain.
Aluminum
Wipe with a soft cloth and soapy water. Apply car wax to the frame once a year for extra protection.
Wicker
Use a soft brush and soapy water. Avoid soaking, as water can get trapped in the weave.
Recycled Plastic
The easiest to maintain. Just hose it down and wipe with a cloth. No special treatments needed.
